Unmasking Venezuela Celebration Footage and AI Images of Nicolás Maduro.

AI-generated pictures claiming to portray Nicolás Maduro under arrest after his apprehension by the US have garnered many millions of views on social media.

How Fake Pictures of the President Surfaced Rapidly

The first fabricated AI image seemingly displaying him led off a aircraft surfaced shortly after. The picture was not shared any verified US channels; it was instead published on the platform X by an account describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.

We’ve checked Google’s SynthID, which found the picture was created or altered with AI tools.

Further AI-generated visuals started circulating in the subsequent hours, seemingly depicting more angles of Maduro detained. Discernible watermarks on these images reveal they originated from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.

The detection tool confirms all of these pictures were also created or altered AI technology.

Authentic Image Posted but Fabrications Continued

The former US president released the initial authentic image of Maduro restrained aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. But even after this real photo was published, AI-generated images persisted online but were modified to show the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.

Online investigation reveal these altered fabrications were originally uploaded on the video platform by a graphic design account. Once again, analysis found these subsequent pictures were produced with generative artificial intelligence.
