In the latest top-flight developments, a significant player was issued a lengthy ban, a head coach has pointed to a defender's errors to prove an argument, and Pep Guardiola has demanded defensive betterment after a wild victory.

1. Mejbri Given Four-Game Ban and Fine

The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri was issued a four-match ban and a financial penalty for improper behaviour in October's match against Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed the player faced a separate disciplinary panel after an incident of spitting towards away supporters around the 67-minute mark of a 2-0 victory by Burnley.

A release explained: “A disciplinary panel has punished the Hannibal Mejbri for his actions in the top-flight game with Leeds on 18 October. The charge was that the player acted against the rules of football or in an improper manner and/or engaging in abusive and unacceptable behaviour through spitting towards the area of Leeds United supporters.”

The statement added, “Mejbri later accepted the charge, and the panel handing down a four-match ban and £15,000 after a hearing. The Regulatory Commission’s full explanation for the sanction are to be released in due course.” Burnley, now in 19th place in the table, travel to 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.

2. Maresca Singles Out Adarabioyo's Mistakes to Make an Argument

The Blues' manager Enzo Maresca has argued that not having seasoned players is no a problem for his club, highlighting how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not stop the 28-year-old from playing poorly in a 3-1 loss against Leeds United.

Maresca, who manages the youngest team in the Premier League, does not feel that inexperience was a factor in their poor result. He made his argument by singling out Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced player in the lineup, after he delivered an error-strewn performance in central defence.

“People always mention a lack of experience when we drop points,” Maresca stated. “When we defeated Barcelona, the draw with Arsenal, no one was mentioning older personnel. I understand that if we lose, we are constantly looking for the reason why, but in my view why we lost against Leeds was not down to inexperience, it was because we were not good enough.”

He added, “Who was the most senior player on our team in the match? Who was? Was he any good? So, it’s not about experience. It's that those 11 players, they were not up to standard.”

3. Guardiola Insists Defence 'Has to Improve'

The Manchester City manager has insisted his team have learnt from a midweek thriller against Fulham and the episode is now in the past. The team survived to claim a 5-4 win in a incredible encounter on Tuesday, having led 5-1 with almost 60 minutes gone.

This followed they fought off a fightback to win 3-2 in the prior game, it raised more questions regarding whether they possess resilient required to mount a title challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “It’s behind us,” he said. “Good learnings, I hope. At this level, for every team, you have to take onboard both good and bad performances and results and focus on what's next.”

“Naturally I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to understand the cause, to not allow the goals. After conceding three against Leeds, and the five against Fulham you can see the two sides, correct? Therefore, we have we have done plenty of positive things. But how many attempts had Leeds have? Three? Scored two. It’s not good. How many shots on target for Fulham have? Five, six? So the average of chances conceded is too high. We have to be better.”

4. Newcastle Focus New Livramento and Botman Deals

The Magpies' new sporting director, Ross Wilson, has placed contract discussions with key defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda at St James’ Park. He arrived after leaving Nottingham Forest recently and is pleased to learn midfielder Sandro Tonali is on a deal extending to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.

This allows Wilson to prioritise negotiations with Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s agreement ending in 2027 and Botman's a year later, Newcastle's talks are being treated with some importance.

“The initial three or four days after starting is when I discovered that Sandro’s contract situation was much better than the one I was expecting,” said Wilson. “But it’s no secret that we wishes to renew Tino’s deal and also wants to renew Sven Botman’s as well. These talks are underway.”

Head coach Eddie Howe will be without Botman for the match with Burnley this Saturday, with the defender likely to be out for at least another week.
