The Year 2026 Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been not at all new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their visibility has seemingly increased in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are legitimate Frog Games.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this rise, I undertook a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the wave in gaming seems particularly pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

In my opinion, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a myriad of unique mechanics.

A number of the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year yet.

Should these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be on the verge of a true croaking cultural moment.
