For much of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped within a psychic prison constructed from the memories of Henry Creel. The search for a way out in episode 6 forces them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—an event that may just hold the means to overcome him once and for all.

A Journey Into the Cavern

When she finds Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a spyglass found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a child version of Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma wasn't just a defensive killing.

Similar to other plot points this season, the significance of the mine shaft incident originates in the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to give to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is understood of his research, the briefcase almost certainly contained some of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, which triggered the awakening of his powers—powers he would later pass on to the kids under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the case could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he struggles with the influence of a dark entity, similar to how Will was controlled by the shadow monster in season 2.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear of that cave highlights how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a showdown between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to gain strength.

His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the ultimate battle that awaits.
