The Animated Series' Creator Reveals Alastor and Rosie's Origin Tale Serves as a Huge Teaser for Season Three
Dedicated fans of the series at last got a much-anticipated backstory in the second season's fourth episode, called “It's a Deal.” This episode is likely to prompt a lot of discussion and pose many inquiries about the essence of one particular demon Overlord who seems significantly stronger than any character previously realized. The new revelations feature a look into the mortal existence of a fan-favorite character before his death and condemnation to the underworld.
A Significant Hint for Upcoming Installments
The series creator shared an inside detail about the episode – it serves as a major tease for the third season. Additionally, she provided more insight into the process of creating the mortal forms of her infernal cartoon figures.
Spoiler alert for the fourth episode of Hazbin Hotel, season 2.
In “It’s a Deal”, a flashback reveals that popular character Alastor, the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his mortal days. Knowing full well he was headed to the underworld, he made contact with the afterlife in advance to obtain a powerful role there. Rosie, the charismatic leader Hell’s cannibal community, promised Alastor he would become “the strongest Sinner in Hell” in exchange for his eternal spirit.
This prompts the question: In what way is Rosie powerful enough to elevate Alastor above every other Demonic Sinners?
“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the first stepping stone in a larger narrative that encompasses a great deal, leading into season 3,” the creator states. “Obviously that is a perfect question: How is she so strong? The answer could be various factors, but the answer is in season three. I am thrilled for fans to witness it.”
It is uncertain the duration viewers will have to remain for Hazbin Hotel’s next season. The production companies have approved seasons 3 and 4, but the showrunner often notes that animation is a time-consuming endeavor, and subsequent seasons are undated. Still, she says withholding on those details is a crucial aspect of maintaining season 2’s focus where it belongs.
“The difficulty of any kind of deal with infernal beings, or narratives that have mysteries, is giving the audience sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that gradually, and allowing that be satisfying,” she comments. “So I'm very excited.”
Questions Answered in The Next Season
The showrunner assures that season 3 will address the queries followers have been posing, such as why the cannibal leader ordered Alastor to vanish for seven years, which weakened his power in Hell.
“The entire seven-year span, and the pacts these humans are doing, and everything — it contributes to a larger story,” she reveals.
In the meantime, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode provides another glimpse into how the core cast of Sinner Demons looked like as mortals, following after viewing Sir Pentious’ Victorian-era human form in episode 2. She explains that significant consideration was put into these character designs.
“The mortal forms of these personas carry great significance,” she notes. “They range from looking really different from their infernal version to looking very similar. With Pentious, the first one we see, there was a little bit of a debate within the team between choosing a design that symbolizes the personality, as opposed to selecting an option that's historically correct. We leaned toward making a design that just seemed like it was him.”
She says the primary controversy over the mortal look of Pentious was his long hair: “We were like, ‘No one typically had extended hair like that in Victorian-era London.’ But simultaneously, we think the silhouette is extremely crucial, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We sort of provided the rationale that he lived in seclusion, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there's always a way. As we create the human versions of these personas […] it's such a fun thing to investigate and determine. I am looking forward for fans to view additional of the appearances of the human versions.”
