Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing unneeded offerings could be considered a little discourteous – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Auction

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. This unusual assortment is said to contain items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, collectively, are worth an estimated €800,000. They will be put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based art dealer. The specific date remains to be announced, although the aim is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the proceeds donated to a selection of charitable causes.

Palazzo Chigi Treasures

The items are said to be stored in a storage room on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore planning to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been stored away indefinitely.

A complete inventory has not yet been made public, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was reviewed by officials. The question focused on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.

A Global Assortment of Presents

Notable gifts feature:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts were the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Political Backdrop

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.

This charitable initiative symbolizes a novel approach to handle the protocol gifts that build up during a leader's tenure.
