Major Web Disruption Affects Numerous Sites and Apps

A large-scale online outage has impacted dozens websites and applications around the world, and users experiencing issues getting online due to difficulties at Amazon’s web hosting service.

The impacted apps comprise Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with multiple Amazon-operated services such as its primary shopping site and the Ring home security firm.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted in addition to its branches the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were further notifications of issues reaching the the tax authority website on that morning. Additionally in Britain, multiple Ring users used online platforms to state their home gadgets were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of problems on individual platforms reached the tens of thousands for each platform.

Amazon reported that the outage originated in the eastern region of the US at Amazon Web Services, a section that supplies crucial online framework for many firms, who utilize space on Amazon servers. AWS is the most extensive web hosting platform.

Soon after midnight (PDT) in the United States (morning UK time), officials reported “higher problem frequencies and delays” for the cloud services in a region on the Atlantic seaboard of the America. The cascading impact seemed to hit apps around the world, and the problem monitoring service reporting issues with the same sites in various regions.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that reports on internet outages, also reported a rise in issues on the start of the week, and numerous instances situated in the Virginia area, the location of the eastern US data center where AWS said the issues started.
