Gas Detonation Costs Three Law Enforcement Officers Amid Eviction Operation in Northern Italy
A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in a seemingly intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
Sequence of Events
The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property near the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.
Investigation Developments
Two individuals were taken into custody at the site and one more individual who escaped after the incident was found shortly later. The trio have been taken to hospital.
The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the location revealed the structure turned into a heap of debris.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.
Financial Context
The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the property was subject to an court order due to debts accumulated by the siblings.
Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the family members who had locked themselves into the house. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents caused the explosion.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.
Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the minister said.
Impact Assessment
Injured individuals by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
According to the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.
He thought the blast had taken place on a story above the entrance and told the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told local news, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto united with other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
