A Look at Ebony & Ivory – A Surreal Independent Film A World Away From Its Musical Namesakes
Directed by Jim Hosking, famous as a wacky understated offbeat humor, the movie offers a strange humorous story coming across as similar to an epic comedy bit by an acclaimed comedy duo. Moviegoers could end up laughing in a spirit of giving up, struggling to believe the constant and surreal conversations shared by the main characters.
The Premise
Set in the Mull of Kintyre during that era, the film introduces an artist called Paul who sports a faux northern English tone. He greets a visitor traveling by a dinghy through choppy grey waters. Enter a vision-impaired Black music legend referred to as Stevie, but curiously appears to see and mock his host's most peculiar habit: a cheerful positive signal.
The two are portrayed with performances from a regular collaborator alongside another familiar face, both this filmmaker’s regular actors.
Bizarre Moments
With a warm drink, whisky, and a joint, the talks unfold similar to two aliens encountering each other initially. Their dynamic changes from suspicion to animosity, before finding an unexpected rapport. This relationship holds up by joint antics such as braving the waters icy seas, disguising themselves like farm animals and making animal sounds, plus additional peculiar escapades.
The Creative Spark?
Will this unusual encounter actually inspire the situation where two great musicians to write among the most celebrated unity-themed tracks ever recorded? It's possible. Yet never are viewers shown truly talk about its creation, demo notes, or draft lyrics – presumably due to rights restrictions. Still, viewers get laughs in moments the character multiple times shouts those words with a strong Stateside tone. This level of nonsense remains a unique treat.
